Embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital to receive further medical attention after falling ill while at Kamiti Maximum Prison.
Reports indicate that the governor was rushed to KNH on Monday night after complaining of severe chest pains, allegedly caused by officers who manhandled him while arresting him in Voi.
Sonko’s lawyers on Monday had sought for his release on bail terms arguing that he needed urgent medical attention after being assaulted by police officers.
“He needs medical attention with the possibility of an admission for injuries suffered during his arrest in Voi,” said Cecil Miller, one of Sonko’s lawyers.
However, Anti-corruption chief magistrate Douglas Ogoti ordered Sonko’s admission to hospital be approved by the relevant prisons’ authority.
“Due to the urgency of the medical treatment of the accused, it is ordered that his admission to hospital be certified by the prison’s medical centre in the full presence of his physician in order to be escorted to any hospital for medical attention,” said Ogoti.
